Client

Ministry of Works and Transport

The contract included the following major activities:
• Setting up a crusher at the Dolerite Quarry some 10km to the north of Keetmanshoop.
• Blasting and crushing of the suitable rock to produce 172,000m³.

UPGRADING OF THE AUS – LUDERITZ RAILWAY LINE:
NEW RAILWAY EMBANKMENT (2002 – 2011)

Client

Ministry of Works and Transport

The project consisted upgrading of the 139km Aus-Luderitz railway line from the existing 11.5 ton axle load to accommodate 18.5 tons. For this task the existing rails were removed and the formation was improved by constructing new layerworks to safely carry the increased loads. Sharp radius bends and steep-grade sections were also improved. The whole project was completed in three (3) phases spanning over the period.

Consultant role:

K&A Partnership was responsible for the initial investigation, feasibility study, design and full-time construction supervision, Contract Management & Administration and Project Management.

UPGRADING OF THE AUS – LUDERITZ RAILWAY LINE:
PERMANENT WAY CONSTRUCTION (2012-2018)

Client

Ministry of Works and Transport

This project involved the construction of the 139km of permanent-way for the railway line. The construction period was split over two (2) phases. The existing 25 and 30 kg/m rails were to be replaced by 48 kg/m rails. Part of this section was constructed using the conventional methods with 48kg/m rails supported by P2 concrete sleepers on 57 mm crushed stone ballast. Whereas, another section was constructed using an advanced method of construction, Tubular Track system, ballastless continuous concrete beam-track system for the 48kg/m rail. This section consisted of areas where shifting sand dunes are present and the ballast gets continually contaminated by the sand, the ballastless track system is therefore ideal for this section.

Consultant role:

K&A Partnership was responsible for the design and full-time construction supervision, Contract
Management & Administration and Project Management.

REHABILITATION OF LUDERITZ STATION, CONNECTION TO LUDERITZ HARBOUR,
PAVING OF MARSHALLING YARD (2012-2014)

Client

Ministry of Works and Transport

This contract involved various components to tie in with the operations of the Luderitz Station.
These were as follows:
• Construction of pavement platform for the goods and station area at the marshalling yard.
• Construction of layer-works and paving for the Kapps and Hafen Street level crossings including
kerbing, channelling, sidewalks, concrete beams and walls.
• Construction of storm water drainage systems and re-instatement of road paving at
road-rail crossings.

UPGRADING OF THE AUS – LUDERITZ RAILWAY LINE:
REPAIR OF STORMWATER DAMAGES RESULTING FROM FLASH FLOODS (2012-2013)

Client

Ministry of Works and Transport

This project was divided into earthworks, drainage structures and permanent way removal and reconstruction due to damages caused by the flash floods. All perway components were dismantled and reinstalled once the embankment was repaired. Additional culverts were installed at various identified positions. Erosion protection was done at all vulnerable sections using either gabions, reno-matresses, stone pitching or berms, to channel flood waters. Damaged embankment sections were reconstructed by benching, or full-width reconstruction.

K & A Partnership was responsible for the design, full-time construction supervision, Contract
Management & Administration and Project Management.

UPGRADING OF THE AUS – LUDERITZ RAILWAY LINE:
CONSTRUCTION OF THE SAND SHELTER TUNNEL (2014-2016)

Client

Ministry of Works and Transport

K&A Partnership was appointed and have completed the design and documentation of a sand shelter tunnel to allow shifting sand dunes to pass over the installed railway track. The sand shelter is designed to stretch 4.4km in length and is to be constructed with in-situ reinforced concrete and reinforced concrete pre-cast elements. The necessary ventilation and fire risk pre-cautions were designed by specialists in accordance with international requirements  /specifications. K&A was also involved in the mitigation investigation of molecular sand movement over railway tracks, carried out by specialists from Oxford University, England.

Consultant role:

K&A Partnership was responsible for the investigations, design and documentation, and will be
responsible for full-time construction supervision, Contract Management & Administration
and Project Management.

UPGRADING OF THE SANDVERHAAR – BUCHHOLZBRUNN RAILWAY LINE (2016-2018)

Client

Ministry of Works and Transport

K&A Partnership was appointed and have completed the design and documentation of a 42km section of railway track to be realigned due to the extremely poor condition of the existing railway track and formation. It was a requirement that the standard of the railway track be upgraded to carry axle loads of 18.5 tons. Ballasted conventional track shall be installed using P2 concrete sleepers and 48kg/m rails. The design includes the flood hydrology for the area, as sections of the current track have regularly wash away previously due to heavy rain down-pours in the catchment areas. New bridges, culverts and other hydraulic structures have been designed to accommodate the flood waters of the major rivers in the section. Additional passing loops have also been designed within the 42km railway section.

Consultant role:

K&A Partnership was responsible for the investigations, design and documentation, and will be responsible for full-time construction supervision, Contract Management & Administration and Project Management.

CONSTRUCTION OF ONGWEDIVA SERVICE STATION ON ERF 7503, ONGWEDIVA
(2017-2019)

Client

Querida’s Trading PTY Ltd (Private client)

The project required the structural and civil expertise for the construction of a new restaurant and carwash development of about 500m2. The structures consisted of various steel canopies for the carwash and parking areas with the restaurant structure being a combination of brick, steel and concrete materials. The final construction levels of the development relative to the existing fuelling station on the adjacent erf, was critical to allow the customers to have access to both facilities and also accommodate stormwater surface drainage.
